Richard Rees travels widely recording roof-top vistas. In his studio, these records are subject to his architect’s eye, and formal compositions of vivid colour are made in oil pastels. The result is a very particular vision of the way in which different societies and traditions develop unique ‘Patterns of Settlement’.

Rees trained and practiced as an architect before becoming a professional architectural illustrator in 1984. Specialising in large scale Masterplan design, he was responsible for the Masterplan for the All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon (including Henman Hill) and the City Centre Masterplan for Liverpool One, which was shortlisted for the Stirling Prize in 2012. He became Chairman of the Society of Architectural Illustration in 2015.
